For Aquaculture
The Industry Challenge

DECLINING OCEAN RESOURCES

As consumer demand for healthy seafood and affordable protein sources increases, wild fisheries simply cannot keep pace. According to the FAO, more than 70 percent of the world’s fish species are already exploited, with the world’s oceans projected for commercial depletion by 2048, if sustainable fishing practices are not adopted.

AQUACULTURE ON THE RISE

Aquaculture now contributes more than 50 percent of world seafood, according to the FAO. With constant demand for the health benefits of salmon, aquaculture accounts for more than two-thirds of world supply, with consumers expecting farm-raised salmon be available all-year-long and comparable to wild in freshness and appearance.

CONSUMERS DEMAND COLOR

But without a source of astaxanthin in their diet, farmed-raised salmon would have a pale, off-white color with limited consumer appeal. To achieve the signature pink color of wild salmon and satisfy the purchasing criteria of commercial seafood buyers, it is essential that fish producers supplement their feed with carotenoids, such as astaxanthin.
